ZynQ 360, a global provider of asset visualisation software and data capture services, recently completed a 3D capture project in Italy.

The project involved several long piers essential for supply tankers, posing a unique challenge due to its size and lack of reference points.

The ZynQ 360 team used a NavVis VLX unit, a high-tech, mobile mapping system that utilises lasers to measure distances and generate 3D models. This system relies on reference points for accuracy, much like landmarks help with navigation.

To ensure precise geolocation, the team strategically placed ground control points (GCPs). These points enhanced point cloud accuracy by providing external positional data, automatically geo-referencing and aligning the data.

Using SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation and Mapping), the team efficiently captured the piers' complex structures, producing high-resolution 3D models, including a pier over 650 meters long—nearly three-quarters the height of the Burj Khalifa!

“This project exemplifies the power of 3D technology for comprehensively documenting and managing critical infrastructure,” said Chani Tough, a ZynQ 360 lead capture technician. “The NavVis VLX’s four-camera setup combined with our team’s expertise in SLAM enabled us to capture the site in intricate detail with precise geolocation.”

The dataset will be uploaded and shared in the ZynQ asset visualisation software to allow engineering stakeholders access to a digital replica of the location allowing for improved communication with remote engineering design colleagues and the ability to create work packs and conduct hazard analysis from their desktops.
