The Home Secretary received a free ticket for a Taylor Swift concert weeks before deciding to give the pop star VIP police protection.
Yvette Cooper attended the pop sensations concert in London after her husband received four tickets from Swift's music label Universal.
The Metropolitical Police took the highly unusual decision to give the singer a blue-light motorcycle escort to her Eras Tour shows after a foiled terror plot in Austria.
Ms Cooper and London Mayer Sadiq Khan who share political responsibility for policing, spoke to the Metropolitan Police to encourage them to give the megastar a VIP escort through London.
It has now emerged that both Ms Cooper and Mr Khan attended Swift’s shows.
Sky News reported that Cooper was a guest of Swift’s music label, Universal Music. However the ticket was not declared as it was understood to be worth £170 — less than the £300 that would make it a declarable expense.
The culture secretary, Lisa Nandy, on Wednesday denied any improper influence was put on police.
“I utterly reject that there’s been any kind of wrongdoing or undue influence in this case,” she told Sky News.
Nandy added: “When you have major events, whether in London or in other parts of the UK, the home secretary will be involved in a conversation where there is a security risk.
