Wood RecyclAbility, a Pitmedden-based social enterprise, has received a donation of 100 lockers from Shell UK, with support from ETZ Ltd.

The lockers, donated from Shell’s former Tullos headquarters, have already been put to good use within the organisation and shared with other local social enterprises.

Of the 100 lockers, Wood RecyclAbility has retained 36 for internal use, improving storage facilities for staff and trainees. An additional 46 lockers have been distributed to seven other local social enterprises, while the remaining units will be repurposed for further projects.

Established in 1997, Wood RecyclAbility provides practical work experience for adults with additional support needs through the recycling and reuse of waste wood. The organisation has grown from two staff and six trainees to seven staff and 25 trainees working daily at its purpose-built facility on five acres of land.

On average, 1,500 tonnes of waste wood is collected and processed at the facility each year, primarily from offshore companies. Recycled wood is sold to local joiners or crafted into garden furniture, bird boxes, and other wildlife products, generating valuable income for the organisation. Wood unsuitable for crafting is processed into chipboard and MDF or used to heat the workshop.

Brian Reid, operations manager at Wood RecyclAbility, said: “This generous donation has had an immediate and positive impact on our operations. It’s also great to see other local organisations benefiting from the donation, reinforcing the strong sense of community and collaboration we value.”

Wood RecyclAbility remains a shining example of a sustainable business delivering both environmental and social benefits.
