On Tuesday February 11, women from across Aberdeen came together to discuss the challenges of poverty and inequality in the city at the 'Women Shaping a Fairer Future in Aberdeen' event.

The event was organised by CFINE’s lived experience group, which was established in 2023. This group brings together individuals with firsthand experience of poverty. Comprising 12 participants, they met 13 times over the past year to address various topics related to poverty and food insecurity. Their discussions culminated in a report aimed at informing FPAA, local authorities, the Scottish Government, and other stakeholders.

This event was hosted by CFINE and run in collaboration with the Scottish Women’s Budget Group which “brings together a wide range of women from across Scotland who have an interest in women's equality and want to achieve better gender equality in our society".

The event provided a platform for women to share their experiences and insights, ensuring their voices are heard in shaping local policies. The discussion covered a range of vital topics, including benefits and welfare, care responsibilities, safety, health and wellbeing. Attendees expressed their concerns, highlighted the struggles they face, and offered suggestions for change.

Their contributions will be included in the Scottish Women’s Budget Group’s report, which will include formal recommendations for Aberdeen City Council to tackle gender inequalities. The report will be made available to the public and the Council will respond within 6-months of submission.

The event was a great success, with a warm and welcoming atmosphere that encouraged open dialogue. Soup, sandwiches, and refreshments helped create a relaxed setting.

A team from Station House Media Unit were also in attendance to film the event and conduct interviews. A small film will be made of the event, and the footage will also be used for another production about sexism in North East Scotland.

A huge thank you goes out to everyone who participated and contributed to the conversation. Special thanks go to the Scottish Women’s Budget Group, Station House Media Unit, and CFINE’s Lived Experience Group for their invaluable support in making this event possible.

This gathering was an important step in advocating for a fairer and more equal Aberdeen, where women's voices help shape meaningful change.

Stay tuned for further updates, SHMU’s films, and the publication of the Scottish Women’s Budget Group report.
