Dundee University to cut 632 jobs to plug £35m deficit

Dundee University is to cut 632 jobs in a bid to address a £35million deficit.

Staff were informed of the news by interim principal Shane O'Neill at a meeting in the university, which was also held online.

The move represents about 20% of the university's workforce of more than 3,000 people.

Boohoo renamed Debenhams as new boss plans radical turnaround

Boohoo is to be renamed Debenhams Group as part of the new chief executive’s radical plan to turn around the fortunes of the troubled online retailer.

Dan Finley said that as well as continuing to sell its own products, the group would focus on selling other retailers’ brands — following the so-called marketplace model — after the success of its Debenhams business, which it bought out of administration in 2021.

Debenhams, the 247-year-old fashion chain, left the British high street when it fell into administration in 2021. Boohoo bought the company for £55million and relaunched it as an online-only retailer.

Estate agent to open Union Street branch six years after leaving Aberdeen

Estate agency Simpson & Marwick is returning to Aberdeen after a six-year break.

It will be led by well-known Aberdeen businessman Rob Aberdein with Nikki Hempseed, former Aberdein Considine head of estate agency, spearheading the expansion.

Simpson & Marwick will open a new office on Union Street in the coming weeks.

Nationwide customers to get £50 each after Virgin deal

More than 12 million customers of Nationwide will each receive a payment of £50 following the takeover of Virgin Money.

The Nationwide, the UK's largest building society, described the money as a "thank you" to its members, at a cost of £600million.

However, there was criticism that the same members were not given a vote on the £2.8billion acquisition of Virgin Money last year.
