Volunteers wanted for local Memory Walk

Alzheimer Scotland is calling for people across Aberdeen to come forward to support people living with dementia by volunteering to help out at the Aberdeen Memory Walk which will take place in Hazlehead Park Sunday, September 17.

12 Noon start for walkers and volunteers would be needed from 10am to 1pm.

Whether you stride, stroll or toddle, Memory Walks provides a great opportunity for people to come together this September to pay tribute to someone special who is living with dementia, or who has passed away, to help raise vital funds for dementia support services across the region.

Local volunteer opportunities are available to help give back and support the event including helping with event set up, road marshalling, greeting and thanking walkers, as well as handing out refreshments to walkers along the route. If you would like to volunteer at the local Memory Walk call Andrea Watt on 01224 644077 or email awatt@alzscot.org

Andrea Watt, community fundraiser from Alzheimer Scotland, said: “Memory Walks is Alzheimer Scotland’s biggest fundraising event of the year and help make a big difference to people living with dementia, their families and carers in Scotland. The Aberdeen Walk alone raised £18,500 last year and we are hoping to beat that!”

“To help support the Aberdeen Memory Walk we are calling on local residents to come forward to help us make this year’s walk a big success for all walkers. The day can be mixed with emotions but is also a very uplifting and fun for everyone involved.”

Dementia is the biggest health and social care challenge faced by society today. There are approximately 90,000 people living with dementia in Scotland and by the year 2020 there will be more than 1 million people living with dementia in the UK.

Registration for a Memory Walk is £10 for adult walkers, £5 for 12-16 year olds and under 12s can walk for free. Visit www.memorywalksscotland.org to find out more and to register.

Alzheimer Scotland has joined forces with The Sunday Post to help raise 300k across the 2017 Memory Walks series. Memory Walks are supported by Iceland.
