Union Terrace Gardens says it with flowers

Two leading Aberdeen-based social enterprises have had their landmark anniversaries celebrated with floral arrangements in the city’s Union Terrace Gardens.

Displays for Scarf and Aberdeen Foyer, marking 30 and 20 years respectively, now overlook the main gardens from the bank at Rosemount Viaduct.

Scarf was formed in 1985 to alleviate fuel poverty and the Foyer in 1995 in response to concerns about youth homelessness and unemployment. Since their formation both organisations have expanded their range of services to make a significant impact to individuals and groups across the north east.

The arrangements were well-received by judges who visited the site last week as part of Aberdeen City Council’s campaign bid for the Beautiful Scotland programme. The Chief Executives of both Scarf and the Foyer were also in attendance.

Thane Lawrie, Chief Executive of Scarf, said: “We’re delighted to have this visual tribute to our valued organisation in the heart of the city of its birth. It’s fitting that it sits side-by-side with Aberdeen Foyer who, like us, is celebrating decades of making positive social change for a better quality of life for the people we engage with.”

The Foyer's chief executive Ken Milroy added: "It's great to see our logo planted out so well in a central public park. Scarf and the Foyer are prominent local social enterprises playing a significant role delivering essential public services and making a notable impact on the lives of many people in our community. This is a fantastic way of publically recognising our contribution."

Both crests were commissioned by Aberdeen City Council, marking a long-standing working relationship between the two social enterprises and the local authority. A Foyer Works trainee assisted in the planting of their display.
