Major roadworks on a central section on Union Street have been delayed - with the council blaming "contractor productivity" for the slow progress.

The transformational work, which includes widening pavements and creating dedicated cycle lanes, has already seen almost the entire width of the street sealed off between Market Street and Bridge Street since summer 2024.

And now, The Press and Journal reports, the disruption is set to continue for another full year.

It had been hoped the works would be finished by the end of 2025, but that has now been pushed back until spring 2026.

In a report to go before a council finance committee next week, chief capital officer John Wilson outlined several reasons for the delays, including "less than required contractor productivity”.
