Top Union Street restaurant Vovem has been devastated by a huge fire which ripped through its kitchen.

All staff were successfully evacuated but the eatery has been severely damaged by the blaze, which brought Union Street to a halt yesterday.

Around 30 firefighters and other emergency crews were called to steakhouse just before noon.

Flames and smoke could be seen coming through the roof at the back of the building. There are no reports of any casualties.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said eight fire engines and specialist resources were sent to the blaze that was "well alight". It was extinguished by 17:30.

Closures had been put in place on Union Street, Summer Street, Union Wynd and Little Chapel Street.

Last night, owners PB Devco updated customers on social media, confirming that the restaurant will be closed until further notice.

"Following a major incident at Vovem, whereby thankfully all of our team were successfully evacuated, we are sad to inform our customers that we are closed for business until further notice," the firm said.

"Due to the devastating damage to our venue, our team is working closely with the relevant parties.

"Please be patient whilst our management team works through our bookings and they will be in touch in due course. If you do have any booking queries, please get in touch on vovem@pbdevco.com.

"Thank you for your understanding at this time and we hope to bring you some positive news soon."
