Energy businesses operating in the UK are being urged to make their voices heard amid two crucial consultations that will shape the future of the industry.

Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce (AGCC) has launched the research phase of its 41st biannual Energy Transition Survey, an industry-leading report that provides crucial insights into the evolving landscape of the UK energy sector.

Sponsored by leading business advisory firm Johnston Carmichael and clean energy group D2Zero, this year’s survey takes place at a pivotal moment for the industry, running in parallel with two UK Government consultations on the future of the North Sea.

Over two decades, AGCC’s Energy Transition Survey has become one of the most respected and widely cited sources of intelligence on the sector’s ambition and sentiment.

The findings influence policymakers, with recent reports being at the heart of the 2024 General Election debate and playing a direct role in the creation of the North Sea Transition Taskforce.

This edition of the survey provides a critical platform for businesses across the sector to share their perspectives on the challenges and opportunities facing the industry.

With UK Government consultations on North Sea licensing, the fiscal regime and the country’s clean energy future underway, the Chamber is urging businesses to use the survey to make their voices heard and shape the policy decisions that will define the sector’s future.

Elements of this year’s survey have been adapted to inform the Chamber’s response to both consultations.

Russell Borthwick, Chief Executive at Aberdeen & Grampian Chamber of Commerce, said: “Decisions taken in the coming months will have a profound impact on the future of our energy sector, influencing not just oil and gas but the development of new low-carbon technologies

“This survey provides an opportunity for industry leaders to deliver the data and insights that will help shape government thinking at this crucial juncture – so it is more important than ever that companies take part.

“We know that the results of this survey are followed at the highest level of government – so much so that they are referenced in their current consultations – therefore the industry must seize this chance to shape its future.”

Johnston Carmichael and D2Zero will bring expert insight to the report, which will be launched at a business breakfast in Aberdeen on May 27th.

Bob Drummond, Chief Executive at D2Zero, said: “We need robust data to drive the conversation forward, and that is why this survey is such an important piece of work.

“By participating in this survey, companies have the opportunity to share their experiences, highlight the challenges they face, and offer solutions that will help drive progress. The value of this research cannot be overstated – it is essential for building a roadmap towards a more sustainable and resilient energy future.”

David Wilson, Office Managing Partner for Johnston Carmichael in Aberdeen, said: “As the energy sector navigates increasing complexity, independent research like this is vital in helping businesses and government make informed decisions.

"With the energy transition underway and policy changes on the horizon, we need data that reflects the realities faced by businesses. By gathering perspectives from across both operators and the supply chain, we can help shape discussions that will influence the sector’s future and ensure that businesses are equipped to navigate the road ahead.”

The survey is now open to businesses across the energy supply chain, from oil and gas operators to renewables developers and technology innovators.

Responses will be anonymised, ensuring that companies can provide candid insights on the opportunities and challenges they face.
