The UK is readying a list of US products it could hit with retaliatory tariffs - if a better deal can't be struck before May 1.

The UK government is preparing to take a tougher stance on US trade relations in case efforts to negotiate a deal more favourable than the new 10% tariff fail.

The BBC reports business secretary Jonathan Reynolds is liaising with firms across the UK about the impact the 10% tariffs being imposed on nearly all UK exports to the US will have.

He is also canvassing opinion on which products should be on a list of US products to potentially impose levies on.

If UK negotiators can't agree a deal to reduce the 10% tariff by May 1, Reynolds told MPs the government could impose retaliatory tariffs on US imports.

The list currently consists of 417 pages, making up 27% of imports from the US.

The items, ranging from oil and weapons to horses and children's clothes, have been specifically chosen because they would have a "more limited impact" on the UK economy,

It comes as Trump told the BBC he believes Sir Keir Starmer is "very happy" with how the UK had been treated on tariffs.
