Top council official admits Union Street ‘open for business’ campaign ‘hasn’t worked’
A senior council official has admitted a major campaign aimed at keeping Union Street businesses alive amid roadworks chaos “has failed”.
A number of colourful signs bearing the message “open for business” were emblazoned all over Aberdeen’s high street in May.
Council leaders hoped the banners would prevent traders from losing customers after large hoardings were erected at their doorstep.
But just a few months after diggers rolled in, desperate traders claim they are “losing thousands and thousands” due to the works.

Britain to suffer biggest exodus of millionaires in the world
Britain is set to suffer the biggest exodus of millionaires in the world ahead of the Government’s planned raid on non-doms, analysis has found.
The share of the population who are millionaires is expected to plunge by 20pc over the course of this Parliament, from 4.55pc now to 3.62pc over the next five years, according to an Adam Smith Institute analysis of UBS forecasts.
This is in contrast to Germany, France and Italy, all of which are predicted to grow their share.
Empty Aberdeen warehouse could become city’s first bouldering centre with climbing wall
A Scottish bouldering firm is looking to expand by opening a dedicated climbing centre in Aberdeen – which would be the first of its kind in the city.
Dundee-based Block10 Bouldering wants to convert an empty warehouse into the sports venue.
It will allow visitors to climb without ropes or harnesses.
The warehouse, which was previously used as a storage archive for Aberdeen University for two decades, has been vacant for more than two years.

John Lewis chief executive to step down as chairman tightens grip
John Lewis has announced it is scrapping its chief executive position just weeks after Dame Sharon White exited the business.
The partnership said Nish Kankiwala, who became its first-ever chief executive in early 2023, would be stepping down from the role next March.
However, rather than seeking a replacement, John Lewis confirmed that Jason Tarry – who recently replaced Dame Sharon as chairman – will take over all executive responsibilities.
