Anas Sarwar has defended Labour picking councillors based in the south of England to contest parliamentary seats in Scotland.

The party has selected London-based charity chief Melanie Ward to represent them in a key target seat in Fife, while Elizabeth Carr-Ellis, a councillor in Kent, will fight the Angus and Perthshire Glens seat. London councillor Eva Kestner has been chosen to contest the Caithness, Sutherland and Easter Ross consituency.

The Scottish Labour leader added that his party is "brimming with talent" and claimed the candidates selected "have connections and ties to Scotland, who want to come and serve the Scottish people".

He added: "We’re brimming with confidence and I can’t wait to elect a whole host of new Scottish MPs and a whole host of new Scottish Labour MSPs."

Ms Ward, who is standing in Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath, failed in her bid to be selected for the Beckenham and Penge seat in London.

She does have history in Scottish politics, having stood in Glenrothes in 2015, though lost out to the SNP.

Ms Carr-Ellis' seat is 540-miles away from her home. She runs a 'menopause café' in Canterbury, a place she says she "fell in love with" after working as a journalist in North-east England.

Ms Kestner does have prior work experience in Scotland having worked as a researcher for Rhoda Grant, MSP for Highlands and Islands, after graduating from Stirling University.

It's unclear why she opted to run for the most northerly mainland constituency in the country.

Active travel is people-powered transport: walking, wheeling (such as wheelchairs, scooters, prams and buggies) and cycling. Improving routes for these options can help more people get to where they want to go, improve people’s health and reduce carbon emissions. There are some good facilities for active travel in both Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, but it is recognised that there is much more that could be done to create safe and attractive routes. The new Regional Active Travel Network will set out a multi-decade vision for high-quality routes within and between the region’s communities and will help define the priorities for improvements and make the case for investment. A draft of the network plan has been developed by Nestrans and with partners Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, and the group are now seeking public views on it. For more information, or to respond to the consultation, please click here. The closing date for responses is 2nd June.
  • Consultation: Developing a natural capital market framework. Natural capital is our geology, soil, air, water, plants and animals. We depend on our natural capital for goods and services that make our lives possible and worthwhile. Public and private investment will be needed to restore and improve our natural capital. The Scottish Government are committed to ensuring that this investment is responsible; that it contributes to a just transition, benefits communities and achieves robust environmental outcomes. The forthcoming Natural Capital Markets Framework aims to strengthen the existing Interim Principles for Responsible Investment in Natural Capital and set out their approach to using public spending more effectively to leverage in responsible private capital. The closing date for responses is 13th June.
  • Consultation: Draft Bioenergy Policy Statement. Bioenergy is a key component of the energy system and contributes to a more circular economy, by turning wastes into valuable resources which can be used for electricity and heat production or to displace fossil fuels in our gas network and transport systems. The Scottish Government's draft Bioenergy Policy Statement signals what the Scottish Government see as the short, medium and long term role for bioenergy in helping to deliver that transition to net zero. • Consultation: Masterplan consent area regulations. The Planning (Scotland) Act 2019 introduced MCAs, which will have expanded powers building upon Simplified Planning Zones. They will allow planning authorities to take a place leadership role, by proactively consenting the type and quality of development they wish to see in their places. Planning authorities will be able to prepare a MCA ‘Scheme’ setting out what they are giving consent for, through the scheme. MCAs allow for frontloading scrutiny and streamlining consents, as MCAs will be broader in scope than SPZs, being able grant planning permission, plus roads construction, listed building and conservation area consent – where provided for in the particular MCA scheme. MCAs will help to facilitate investment in places, by providing certainty and direction to investors. Once the MCA is ‘made’ (adopted) development could be brought forward without the need for an application providing it is in line with the scheme. The 2019 Act established the principle for establishing MCAs, and the Scottish Government is now consulting on the proposals for the detail of the regulations. For more information, or to respond to the consultation, please click here. The closing date for responses is 22nd May.
  • Consultation: Investing in Planning: a consultation on resourcing Scotland’s planning system. We live in financially constrained times and even if money was to be found, there is a complex set of circumstances to address. This consultation explores a range of solutions to support resourcing of the planning system. It sets out options which have the potential to improve the capacity of the Scottish planning system, in particular in planning authorities, in the coming years. It responds to current and future challenges, with a view to identifying a set of short and medium term actions that could improve the capacity of the planning system by helping build resilience and strengthening cross sector collaboration.
