Alex Salmond died without leaving a will in place for his wife of more than 40 years, it has emerged.
It is understood the former first minister, 69, had not left his affairs in order before his sudden death in North Macedonia last October.
Recent changes to inheritance legislation in Scotland mean the situation is less complex than it otherwise may have been, but a source close to the Salmond family said there is concern about the impact on the late SNP leader’s 87-year-old widow Moira.

Thousands report outages of Musk's X platform in US and UK
Elon Musk's social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, experienced massive outages throughout Monday morning that impacted thousands of users in the US and UK.
The outage came as platform monitor Downdetector said it had seen tens of thousands of reports from US users of technical issues affecting the platform.
There were more than 8,000 outage reports from UK users shortly before 14:00 GMT, following a brief but notable surge of reports on Monday morning.
Aberdeen student to open city’s first women-only wellness centre
A Robert Gordon University student is set to open Aberdeen’s first women-only wellness centre this spring.
Serena Leyni, a third-year business management student, says she was inspired by her personal experience of overcoming an abusive relationship.
The 28-year-old used yoga and meditation to regain her confidence during lockdown and now wants to use this to help empower other women through Soothe Your Soul Haven.

Aberdeen wholesaler records loss after selling JK Fine Foods
King Foods, the family-run Aberdeen wholesaler known for supplying food and drink across the region, has faced a challenging year, ending with a financial loss.
The company’s latest report paints a picture of tough trading conditions, as the hospitality sector in the north-east took a hit.
This was compounded by the death of its founder and sole director, John King Snr, in April 2024.
