'Time capsule’ shoemaker’s shop untouched since 1949 to be saved
A “time capsule” shoemaker’s shop that has remained untouched since it closed in rural Royal Deeside in 1949 is to be saved from collapse.
Soutar’s Shop, a ramshackle store about 20 miles east of Balmoral, the King’s Scottish residence, has remained almost undisturbed since its final owner died 75 years ago.
The two-room property still has a corrugated iron roof and Victorian glass windows, while the late proprietors’ tools, machinery, beautifully crafted children’s boots and business ledgers lie as he left them.
Concerns were raised after it emerged that its timbers and fixtures were rotting and historic contents being devoured by rodents and insects.
Controversial plan to build Andy Murray 'legacy' tennis centre is scrapped
A controversial project led by Sir Andy Murray's mother Judy to build a £20m tennis centre near Dunblane has been shelved.
A spokesperson for Ms Murray's charity, the Murray Play Foundation, said the Park of Keir project was no longer viable in its current form.
The charity said in a statement that "significant increases in construction, material, energy and labour costs, a lengthy and uncertain planning process, and protracted discussions with governing bodies" were among the factors behind the decision.
It was hoped the centre would serve as part of Sir Andy's legacy after its completion by providing communities with greater access to sports.
Ikea trials resale website to rival eBay and Gumtree
Ikea is trialling its own second-hand online marketplace so that customers can sell to each other, rather than relying on buy-and-sell websites like eBay or Gumtree.
Ikea Preowned is already up and running in Madrid and Oslo, with the Swedish furniture giant planning to roll out the site globally by December.
It comes against the backdrop of a steadily growing market for second-hand furniture, clothes and equipment.
The incentive would fit Ikea's sustainability aims by reusing items so they don't end up in landfill. It would also help the firm make more profit from the resale of its own goods.
Morrisons slashes night shifts in race to beat rivals
Morrisons is scaling back night shifts for its workers as bosses battle to turn around the grocer’s fortunes and win back market share.
The Bradford-headquartered supermarket chain is reducing night shifts offered to workers and moving largely to a combination of twilight and early shifts in an attempt to make its business more efficient.
Executives at the company insisted the change was not about saving money, claiming instead that the new times allowed for a better handover between shifts that improved productivity and led to fewer mistakes.
The move comes as Morrisons’ new chief executive, Rami Baitieh, kicks off an ambitious turnaround project designed to restore Morrisons to prominence after it was overtaken by Aldi in market share in 2022.
