Trust and confidence in the UK's politics and electoral system has never been lower, according a report authored by expert Sir John Curtice.

The writing for the National Centre for Social Research finds a record number of people saying they "almost never" trust government's to put country before party to tell the truth when in a tight corner.

The report suggests that Brexit is one one of the main reasons for the record low trust, while scandals and the cost of living crisis are also at fault.

Just shy of four in five (79%) of people say Britain's system of governance needs to improved "quite a lot" or a "great deal".

Meanwhile, most (53%) favour a more proportional voting system that's fairer to smaller parties, the largest proportion to ever question the first past the post system.

Sir John said: “The public is as doubtful as it has ever been about the trustworthiness and efficacy of the country’s system of government and the people who comprise it.

“Those struggling financially are particularly disenchanted with the state of government and politics in Britain," he explained.

The writing, title 'Damaged Politics' finds that almost half of the UK's voting population (45%) and "almost never" trust a government to put country before party.
