Transport Minister Jenny Gilruth said reopening North-east rail links would be a "great idea" whilst on a visit to the region last week.

The Transport Minister was invited to Aberdeen last week by North-east MSP Liam Kerr on behalf of Campaign for North East Rail (CNER) to discuss their ambitions for reopening the rail links from Dyce to Ellon and on to Peterhead and Fraserburgh.

CNER believes 10 of Aberdeenshire’s largest towns can be transformed by reconnecting them to fast, reliable public transport providing an utterly transformative system that will result in a massive modal shift for thousands of people in North-east Scotland. And this would offer significant freight opportunities too, moving produce from the region and potentially transporting carbon to the CCUS site at St Fergus.

Jenny Gilruth said: "I think it’s a great idea. I think we should be looking at lots of different railways and how we can reopen them."

Jordan Jack, one of the founders of CNER, said they now have a “quite clear route forward after speaking with the minister”, but said the group needs “the whole North-east to stand up together and say we want this rail link”.
