The Young Achievers Dance Group, a youth-led initiative under the broader Young Achievers Group, showcased their energy, enthusiasm, and commitment at the recently celebrated Black History Month event, hosted by Diversity Bridge SCIO.
This was an amazing opportunity for them to share their heritage with the audience and attendees, leaving everyone feeling culturally enriched and thoroughly entertained. Since the inception of the Youth Group, the dance team has carved out a niche in cultural dances and has built impressive expertise in this field, reflecting their eagerness to celebrate their heritage.
The dedication of these young performers is commendable. With eagerness and focus, they practiced tirelessly, mastering intricate footwork, body movements, and adapting to rhythmic beats with impressive precision. Each practice session brought remarkable improvement, culminating in breath-taking cultural performances.
These young dancers committed to a six-month intensive training to master the dance’s unique legwork. Their passion and determination to perfect the manoeuvres and twists of the rhythmic beats became evident as they eagerly embraced the challenge. Several parents reported that some of the young people were so captivated by the dance that they practiced at home in their free time, watching dance clips to refine their skills. This not only revealed their deep interest in the art but also their strong connection to their cultural heritage.
Dressed in stunning cultural attire, the group has performed at major events across Scotland, including ShmuFest 2024, The Big Help, Afro-Caribbean Festival 2024, Discover Africa Event, Aberdeen Mela, Aberdeen New Yam Festival, International School Aberdeen, and the Black History Month Event, where their presence and poise captivated audiences. Their confidence, coordination, and ability to engage the crowd have made them a standout feature at these events.
Beyond their excellent dance performances, these young people have also developed essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, active listening, and enhanced focus. At Touch of Love, organizing such activities not only nurtures physical and mental well-being but also encourages positive behaviours. Dancing helps promote fitness, prevent obesity, and offers a creative outlet that steers them away from negative peer influences.
Ebuka Ume, a Touch of Love trustee, expressed his pride in the group's accomplishments, stating: “This initiative highlights not only their talent but also the resilience and determination of our young people. By mastering this dance, they are embracing both their cultural heritage and their future, growing not only as performers but as leaders who inspire others in the community.”
Touch of Love provides a platform where young people are empowered to lead activities, express their voices, and design their own projects. This dance initiative is a shining example of how these youths take control of their cultural expression while collaborating in a safe and supportive environment. It offers opportunities for cultural exchange while creating space for young people to network, form bonds, and learn dance styles that are indigenous to their heritage.
If you're looking to add a cultural touch to your events, the Touch of Love young dancers offer cultural dance performances for conferences, events, and sessions, and are happy to grace your occasion with their vibrant performances.
As these young achievers balance their dual identities—embracing both their Scottish roots and cultural heritage, Touch of love applauds their dedication and effort. A special thank you goes out to all the young participants for seizing this opportunity to promote their culture and proudly represent themselves in such an inspiring way.
