An Aberdeenshire hair salon has won its 25th business award and has been shortlisted for a further three as a result of its commitment to the environment.
Élan Hair Design, which can claim to be the UK’s most eco-friendly hair salon, recently won the SME Saver Award at the Lover Energy Savings Awards after making considerable savings on heat, water and electricity at its Inverurie salon.
In addition, Élan has been shortlisted alongside retail giant Aldi in the UK Business Awards Sustainability category. The business will give an open presentation at a day-long event being held at The Park Plaza Riverbank in London on Friday, November 11.
The salon has also been nominated as a finalist in the Evening Express Local Retailer Awards in the Hair and Beauty category with the winners being announced at an awards evening at Aberdeen’s Beach Ballroom on Saturday, November 26.
Élan is also in the running for the Management (SME) accolade at the VIBES Awards – a programme which celebrates green businesses across Scotland.

“We’ve been dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint and doing our bit for the community while providing first-class hairdressing services and to be recognised for those achievements is fantastic.
“We’re looking forward to going to London and presenting. It will be a great experience, even if I am slightly nervous, and hopefully we can bring the award home.”
The business has made significant environmental accomplishments since it began an eco-friendly initiative in 2012 which involved a £250,000 refurbishment of its premises.
Features of the revamp included the installation of PV (photovoltaic) panels which generate electricity and solar-thermal panels to provide energy for hot water.
The salon has since continued to develop innovative methods of reducing its carbon footprint, including designing a system to send hair clippings and other biodegradable waste to be spread as soil improver on local farmers’ fields. Unique measures such as these have allowed the salon to divert 94% of its waste from landfill.
In addition, the business has introduced a carbon management plan, which has led to the salon reducing its emissions by 95% and water consumption by 68%.
