As seen in the BBC and The Guardian, The Food Assembly is a local initiative that brings people together to buy fresh food directly from local farmers and food makers. Every week, customers can order food online from local food producers before picking it up weekly at a local venue. At the Aberdeen Food Assembly, the food comes from an average distance below 50 miles, compared to the 600 miles of a supermarket.
Community is at the heart of The Food Assembly – it connects neighbours to farmers, neighbours to each other, and everyone to their food. By choosing to buy local, shoppers support the community. For every £1 spent through the Aberdeen Food Assembly, 90p stays in the local economy. It also ensures your money reaches the right people; Food producers keep over 80% of sales for every product sold, compared to 15%-25% through supermarkets. In addition, there is also little food waste as all the food is ordered in advance.
The Aberdeen Food Assembly is organized by a group of foodies, who love to share their passion for healthy, good and local food. We will launch on Foodstory Cafe, in Thistle Street, on Sunday December 11. The Assembly gathers a thriving community formed by traditional farmers, food entrepreneurs, artisans and designers. Amongst them you will find the following:
- Katy’s Eggs
- All About Lemons
- The Aurora Juice Company
- The Veg Company
- Shirley’s Jams and Preserves
- Pasta Mia
- Felicity’s Chocolate
- Milton of Auchinhoven
- Highland Drovers & Borland Farm
- Spice Pots
- Trinket Pixie Jewellery
- Bon Accord Soft Drinks
- Great Glen Charcuterie
- The Smoked Game Company
- Claudia Cruz Designs
- From Bakery Lane
At the Food Assembly, customers will collect their online shopping, meet farmers and foodmakers whilst tasting samples and getting to know where their food comes from.
We are looking forward meeting you. We will hold a special Christmas market on December 18. To join our assembly please click here.
