Our poll launches as both candidates are coming under attack for their economic policies this morning.
Sterling is likely to fall if Liz Truss wins the Tory leadership contest and embarks on big tax cuts, City analysts and investors have warned.
The foreign secretary is seeking to win over Conservative Party members with her pledge to bring down taxes immediately, including reversing the national insurance rise that was implemented in April, suspending green levies on energy bills and scrapping a proposed increase in corporation tax.
Financial analysts and fund managers have predicted that such plans could lead to a big increase in government borrowing and knock the pound, according to The Times.
Meanwhile, Conservative donor Sir Rocco Forte has denounced Rishi Sunak’s “ridiculous” plans for the economy as business leaders called for sweeping tax cuts.
The hotelier, who donated £100,000 to Boris Johnson’s election campaign in 2019, said the former Chancellor had been “captured by the Treasury orthodoxy” over his pledge to balance the public finances in the short-term despite the cost of living crisis.
Increases to corporation tax and national insurance, announced by Mr Sunak in the wake of the Covid crisis, were “ridiculous”, “crazy” and “not a Conservative approach to doing things”, Sir Rocco said.
