A brand new corporate initiative to inspire the energy leaders of tomorrow has been launched by Meldrum Academy in partnership with industrial cleaning specialists Sureclean.

Developed in conjunction with Developing the Young Workforce (DYW), the Centre of Excellence initiative offers senior chemistry and physics pupils the opportunity to work on solutions for real-world application in Sureclean’s operations.

As the first corporate partner selected for the flagship programme, Sureclean is providing hands-on industry insight to S5 and S6 pupils.

Under the guidance of chemistry teacher Dr. Mo Jerrow and Sureclean specialists, pupils explore career paths while gaining valuable experience to enhance their studies.

By visiting Sureclean’s Barra Business Park facility to see operations firsthand, they gain practical insights from industry experts, while Sureclean mentors meet at the school bi-monthly to guide their projects.

Sureclean, a leading provider of industrial cleaning and environmental response services, has over 125 years of combined management experience. Its dedicated team of multi-skilled engineers are at the forefront of industry innovation, constantly exploring new technologies and methods to reduce waste and environmental impact.

The corporate partnership is being led by Sureclean’s environmental response director, Mark Shepherd, and sales and marketing lead, Robbie Smith Sinclair, who share their professional expertise with the group of young learners.

“As a team we are committed to environmental sustainability and waste reduction and, as such, it’s a privilege to pass on industry knowledge and to champion innovation and sustainability through programmes such as the Centre of Excellence,” explained Mark.

“This invaluable connection with 16-to-18-year-olds opens up opportunities for their future success and helps leverage the wealth of skills and expertise we have right here in the North-east to inspire and prepare the next generation of energy professionals.

“By taking a leading role in this initiative, we are aligning with our corporate mission to foster growth by equipping young adults with the skills and confidence they need to succeed in their future careers.”

As a global Emergency Oil Spill Response partner, Sureclean drives positive change by influencing environmental best practices and advancing clean energy solutions.

The recent focus of Sureclean’s environmental response service, underlines its commitment to sustainability and waste reduction. Through initiatives like the Centre of Excellence, Sureclean is not only advancing environmental innovation but also shaping a new generation of professionals ready to lead a sustainable energy future.

Dr Mo Jerrow commented: “At Meldrum Academy, we believe in empowering our pupils with the tools and experiences they need to thrive in a rapidly evolving world. The Centre of Excellence initiative is a perfect example of how school and industry can collaborate to create impactful opportunities for young people.

“By working closely with Sureclean, our pupils are not only deepening their understanding of core scientific principles but also witnessing how these principles apply to solving real-world challenges, particularly in sustainability and environmental stewardship.”

Margo Milne, director, DYW North East, added: “The Centre of Excellence is a prime example of education and industry working closely together to equip young people with the skills and insights they need to thrive in the world of work.

“The chance to work on solutions for real-world application is significant for pupils. This opportunity, combined with in-class support, site visits and mentoring from Sureclean specialists, will provide them with a truly meaningful experience.

“It is exciting see the programme reach launch stage. We look forward to continuing our work with Meldrum Academy and Sureclean as it progresses.”
