Rishi Sunak has revealed he went without "lots of things" as a child, including Sky TV.
The Prime Minister, who went to fee-paying Winchester College, now boasts a personal fortune of £651million alongside wife Akshata Murty.
That wealth has been a target for the Labour Party during the election campaign, claiming he is "out of touch".
But Mr Sunak told ITV his family emigrated to the UK with "very little".
He said he was forced to sacrifice "all sorts of things that I would've wanted as a kid that I couldn't have".
He added: "Famously, Sky TV, so that was something that we never had growing up actually."
Mr Sunak's father worked as a GP, while his mother ran her own pharmacy.
Sir Keir Starmer chose not to comment on Mr Sunak's remarks, but Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey, asked about what he was deprived of growing up, said: "I lost my father when I was four and my mum was so fantastic she managed to make up for that.
"She didn’t have that much money... and I remember my mum making me walk up the hill to go to Costcutter where coffee was two pence cheaper."
