The summer display, which opened on Saturday, features full-size models from films and TV shows like Star Wars, The Terminator, Robocop and I, Robot. By the end of the opening-weekend, 503 people of all ages had come through the doors to marvel at the models.
Paul C., one of the first visitors, said: “I was there this morning and loved the robot display! It’s so cool!”
The display, which uses items from one of Europe’s largest private collections of robots, spans 60 years and includes a string of robot toys and characters from the 1950s to the present. It gives visitors the opportunity to understand how our perceptions of robots evolved throughout the decades. Some exhibits, like the S.I.M.O.N life size head from Tomb Raider, were the actual ones used during production.
Elaine Holland, visitor experience manager, said: “It’s an exciting exhibition for the science-fiction fans and the whole family because you can be sure to recognise a robot from a movie or show you watched.”
“Beyond seeing characters that you would normally see on screen, the robot exhibition gives you the opportunity to discover how designers and special effects teams worked to create the scariest, funniest and most lovable robots.”
In addition to the exhibits, the Science Centre proposes interactive shows and hands-on workshop to continue to explore the fascinating world of robots. These include:
- Robots Reporting for Duty: an interactive shows that how robots help us carry outs tasks that would not be possible for human beings
- Robotic Arms Workshop: An opportunity to discover the uses of robotic arms and make a simple robotic hand model.
