Nicola Sturgeon has said she is "relieved" and "vindicated" after police confirmed they were no longer investigating her as part of a probe into SNP finances.

Meanwhile former SNP chief executive Peter Murrell, Sturgeon's estranged husband, appeared in private at Edinburgh Sheriff Court charged with embezzlement.

He made no plea during the behind-closed-doors hearing and was granted bail.

At the same time, police confirmed former first minister Sturgeon, as well as ex SNP treasurer Colin Beattie, would not face any charges.

In the wake of the announcement, Sturgeon made a statement to reporters outside her home.

She said, the BBC reports: "For almost two years, I have had this cloud of investigation hanging over me.

"I think it won't surprise anybody to hear me say that has not been an easy experience. So to reach this point today is obviously something I am relieved about."

"I have done nothing wrong, and I don't think there was ever a scrap of evidence that I had done anything wrong."

She added the confirmation gave her "a bit of vindication as well".
