Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed she will be on the campaign trail from "time to time", but didn't say whether she'll be seen alongside John Swinney.

The former First Minister told journalists at Holyrood that Mr Swinney will "have his own" campaign programme, and she'll only help "in ways I think are helpful to candidates".

She added: "I will be campaigning in the election from time to time, yes."

Ms Sturgeon has kept a relatively low profile since stepping down as First Minister early last year, amid an ongoing police investigation.

She, as well as former SNP treasurer Colin Beattie, was arrested and later released pending further investigation into the SNP's finances in 2023.

Peter Murrell, Ms Sturgeon's husband, has been charged with embezzlement.

One SNP parliamentary candidate told The Times "it might be better on this occasion if Nicola just sat this one out".

Ms Sturgeon said it was "not for me to decide" whether she remained an asset to the SNP.
