A stunning new £225k, social and activity area, featuring recycled granite cassies and timber sleepers has opened at the University of Aberdeen's Hillhead Student Village.

Featuring a decked, canopied area for performances and socialising, the 870 square metre new facility will also have outdoor gym equipment including phone charge points, a water fountain, an outdoor table tennis table and games area, BBQ facilities as well as a community garden with plants from the Cruickshank Botanic Garden.

The space, funded from the Estates Minor Improvements & Planned Maintenance Programme, has been designed in line with the University’s 2040 strategy with wellbeing and sustainability at its core.

It features granite cassies as well as timber sleepers, some of which have been recycled from previous renovation works.

Prospective residents were able to enjoy a roam around the new facility at the University’s Offer Holder Day on April 27, an event designed specifically for those who hold an offer to start studying at the University in September 2022.

Operations Manager Chris Berry said: “Staying in the village is a fantastic way to make friends and meet new people from all over the world while benefitting from the security and welfare support that is in place for our residents.

“We are really excited about this new facility which will offer our residents a great place to relax, socialise and take part in a wide range of activities.

“It is going to be a fantastic addition to the village and will benefit students and staff throughout the year.

“There is currently no other University accommodation in Scotland that has this to offer prospective students.

“It has such a fresh, welcoming feel to it, and we are really looking forward to seeing people enjoying the beautiful space.”

Hillhead Student Village offers accommodation for 2000 students and is located next to Seaton Park, around a 10-minute walk from the Old Aberdeen campus. A free ‘9U’ shuttle bus operates between Hillhead, the Sir Duncan Rice Library and Foresterhill. There are also regular buses to the city centre.

The University will once again be hosting its annual Open Days on 30 August and 1 October, when visitors to the campus will be able to explore the new Hillhead facilities at their leisure. More information about our 2022 Open Days can be found here.
