A team students from Aberdeen organised a gruelling hill climbing challenge which has raised hundreds of pounds for healthcare charities across Scotland.
Third year Robert Gordon University (RGU) nursing students Colin Cass and Zdenka Vlkova worked with colleagues to organise the ‘Red Rox 24 Hour Challenge’ which raised £3,360.
The event, organised by Red Rox Events & Fundraising, saw participants scale the tough terrain of mountains Ben Nevis, Braeriach and Ben Macdui within a 24 hour period on Saturday, August 22.
Four teams participated in this year’s event raising funds for five healthcare charities from across Scotland: The Aila Coull Foundation in Elgin, the British Heart Foundation, Clan Cancer Support, Ward 7 at Dr Gray’s Hospital and the British Red Cross.
Nicky Lally and Kerri Murray both successfully completed Ben Nevis, raising £277.50 for Ward 7 at Dr Gray’s hospital in Elgin.
Red Rox support team member Ben Jackson and Tracey Duncan also completed Ben Nevis raising £270 for Clan Cancer Support before continuing to provide assistance to other participants throughout the event.
Team Sansum members John Mustard, Alex Yeats and Ben Robinson raised £540 for the British Heart Foundation, completing the challenge in 18 hours and eight minutes to beat their previous best time from last year.
However, this year’s winning time of 15 hours 19 minutes was registered by Team Highlanders Kenny Munro, Iain Bright and Mark Laughlan who raised £1,432.50 for Elgin charity The Aila Coull Foundation.
In addition, each team made a small contribution to the British Red Cross bring the charities total to £840.
Event Coordinators and Red Rox Events & Fundraising founders Colin Cass and Yvonne Murray were delighted at the success of the event and thanked all the participants for their hard work in raising funds for these worthy charities.
Colin said: “We are delighted that the Red Rox 24 Hour Challenge has helped to raise so much money for healthcare charities across Scotland and we hope to run it as an annual event in the years to come.
“Now that we’ve successfully run the challenge, we are planning a coffee morning on Saturday, October 31 in aid of the Aila Coull Foundation.”
