In October 2024, a group of eight runners took on the Lisbon Half Marathon, raising a total of £13,644 in support of the Gathimba Edwards Foundation (GEF).

GEF aims to provide children in Kenya and North-east Scotland with the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their potential, focusing on education, housing, and holistic family support.

This was no ordinary fundraising activity. The team came together in an unexpected way, complete strangers until they met at a running camp in Kenya earlier this year.

The runners first crossed paths in February 2024 at a training camp hosted by ‘Kenya Experience’, a running camp in Iten Kenya, a location often referred to as the “home of champions”.

Beyond miles of training and personal growth, the trip also included a visit to GEF’s projects in the local community. Each camp participant had the opportunity to witness GEF’s impact firsthand.

“Seeing the children’s smiles and understanding how even small contributions can transform their lives was truly humbling,” shared one runner. “It was impossible to walk away without wanting to do more.”

Inspired by their experience, the Lisbon group decided to channel their collective passion for running into a meaningful cause. They created a shared fundraising page in the months leading up to the half marathon, rallying friends, family, and colleagues to support GEF.

The group’s efforts have now supported several life-changing projects in Kenya. The funds went towards a complete new build home for Duncan Kimotei and his family, who previously lived in squalid conditions.

Further support included, funding one year of education for five children and two years for three others, provision of food and essential supplies for two families for a year and covering a full year of school meals for 30 unsponsored children across various counties, directly enhancing the quality of life for children and families.

Although the runners hail from different corners of the world, their shared experience in Kenya formed a common goal. “I never imagined I’d meet people who care so deeply about making a difference. This team inspires me every day,” said one of the group members.

If you or anyone you know is keen to fundraise this year, whether through running, hosting events, or supporting GEF’s Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire based initiatives, there are countless ways to make a difference.
