The head of the National Farmers' Union (NFU) believes that Sir Keir Starmer is softening his stance on inheritance tax.
The prime minister met privately with Tom Bradshaw, the NFU president at No 10 on Monday to discuss the government's proposal that will see farmers pay inheritance tax on properties and land worth more than £1million.
The decision had been described as "nothing short of a stab in the back" by Mr Bradshaw during a protest at Westminster last week.
Following the meeting, Mr Tom Bradshaw told The Times he hoped his union and the government could work together on a resolution towards the issue.
“We are trying to give it a bit of room to breathe," he said.
"He hasn’t guaranteed me anything but I think there is a general softening of lines and I don’t want to stoke the fire.
“I think there is perhaps a more conciliatory tone.”
A Downing Street spokesperson described the Monday night meeting as “constructive”, and the prime minister spoke with Mr Bradshaw "to discuss how they can work together to support British farmers.”
