Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer hinted at his support for the Rosebank North Sea development and pledged oil and gas will be "a big part of the future for many decades to come".

It's his strongest suggestion yet that the prime minister is minded to re-approve the licences for the Rosebank and Jackdaw, which were overturned in the Court of Session last week.

Asked by Sky News if he was minded to approve Rosebank, Starmer said: “What we said at the election was we weren’t going to interfere with existing licences - this process started obviously before the election.

“It will have to go through the process, but the mindset is we know that oil and gas is going to be a big part of the future for many decades to come.

"The application has got to come back in again … then there’s got to be a decision made properly.”

It comes as the prime minister drew inspiration from Trump's "drill, baby, drill" comment, promising to "build, baby, build" to bring Britain's struggling economy back to life.

The Times reports Starmer said he would boost growth by "making the tough decisions whether that's on planning, on infrastructure or nuclear".
