SSEN Transmission has been awarded Platinum-accredited membership from The 5% Club, recognising its significant contribution to the development of its employees.
With responsibility for the high-voltage electricity transmission network across the north of Scotland, the company aims to have at least 5% of all employees across the business in ‘earn and learn’ roles, from apprenticeships to graduate placements.
Within SSEN Transmission, those schemes include site-based jobs such as Electrical Apprenticeships and Trainee Construction Manager programmes.
The 5% Club represents a powerful movement of companies working together to make workplace training more inclusive, diverse, and accessible. Collectively, members support 1.9 million employees, with more than 108,000 individuals participating in earn and learn schemes.
SSEN Transmission was awarded Platinum-accredited membership following the 5% Club’s 2024/2025 Employer Audit, which rigorously assessed the company’s efforts, future ambitions, and commitment to social mobility, diversity, and inclusion.
The transmission network operator is on a rapid period of growth, having recently celebrated its 2000th team member joining the business and growing their employee headcount by fivefold in just five years.
This year saw the largest intake for SSEN Transmission’s Graduate Scheme, with 46 people getting started in the bespoke two-year programme earlier this year.
SSEN Transmission’s HR director, Allie Walker, said: "We’re proud to be recognised as a Platinum member of The 5% club, which underlines our significant contribution to increasing the number of ‘earn and learn’ roles such as apprenticeships, graduates and sponsored student course placements throughout the business.
“Over the last few years, we’ve put a focus on creating more roles that combine study with practical experience, while enabling individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required to embark on a fulfilling career within SSEN Transmission.
“This has been particularly valuable at a time of rapid growth for our company, where we have recently welcomed our largest ever intake to our graduate scheme.
"As a team we are passionate about our people, and how we can enable them to fulfil our mission of creating a network for net zero. Achieving Platinum membership is a testament to this effort, and we look forward to building on this success in the years ahead.”
Mark Cameron OBE, chief executive at The 5% Club, commented: “We are incredibly proud of the outstanding employers, like SSEN Transmission who have gone above and beyond to invest in the future of their workforce through a diverse range of 'earn and learn' initiatives.
“By achieving Platinum membership, SSEN Transmission has shown an exceptional commitment to shaping the skills of tomorrow, contributing not only to their business but to the wider economy.”
