Aberdeen Science Centre is set to celebrate British Science Week with an array of interactive exhibits on Discovery Day on March 19.
Visitors will be offered the chance to step into the vast world of science and explore what the centre has to offer. With over 60 exhibits and stalls run by local scientists, Discovery Day will be full of interactive intrigue with plenty of fun experiences and the chance to discover something new.
The Discovery Day session will involve visitors getting the chance to participate in scientific shenanigans, from taking part in groovy lava lamp experiments to setting off explosive reactions with visitors’ own volcanoes. If visitors are looking to take a walk on the wild side, there will be the opportunity to learn all about what makes trees so tremendous and how to protect local wildlife in the Aberdeen area.
Celebrations during British Science Week will offer visitors to Aberdeen Science Centre a hands-on experience with the exhibits, the chance to discover more about climate friendly food choices, alongside several interactive exhibitions featuring medical marvels from the University of Aberdeen and the Rowett Institute. Visitors will also be able to design their very own robots with a programmable Lego robotics session from bp and Computer Xplorers.
Discovery Day will run all day at Aberdeen Science Centre on Saturday, March 19, normal opening times for Aberdeen Science Centre apply. Tickets for Discovery Day must be purchased in advance.
Bryan Snelling, Chief Executive of Aberdeen Science Centre, said: “Discovery Day will be just that, a chance for our visitors to discover something new. We are proud to be hosting this event as part of British Science Week and we cannot wait to welcome people though our doors.
“Opportunities are abound to learn something new, particularly about climate change and the wildlife around us, through the interactive exhibits that we will have on display. This hands-on session will be a fantastic way for people of all ages to learn how they can make an impact on the environment around them and have some fun along the way with volcanoes and other exciting experiments.”
The Discovery Day event is supported by various volunteers and organisations including bp, Science Aberdeen, Duthie Park Rangers, RSPB, University of Aberdeen, Rowett Institute and TechFest.
Aberdeen Science Centre reopened to the public in November 2020 after a major project to create an aspirational science centre which reflects the STEM priorities for both industry and education.
The centre’s exhibits are aimed at all ages and are themed into six zones: Energy; Space; Life Sciences; Make It, Test It; and the dedicated area for the under-6s, as well as the Shell Learning Zone, where science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) are brought to life.
Aberdeen Science Centre’s £4.7million redevelopment was made possible by generous support and funding from the Inspiring Science Fund – a partnership between the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS), UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) and Wellcome - with additional funding provided by Opportunity North East (ONE) and Aberdeen City Council.
The project secured a further £1.5million from funders and sponsors including OPITO, Shell, Equinor, bp, The Robertson Trust, TAQA and CNOOC International to deliver quality exhibits and programmes to enhance the overall visitor experience at the venue, as well through outreach work.
