Breakthrough in technology earns Sonomatic and Geo Oceans a finalist spot at the Subsea Expo Awards 2024 for their un-manned cargo tank inspection technology, i-COT.

Sonomatic and sister company Geo Oceans, announced that they had been shortlisted as finalists for the JV Technology Development Award at the Subsea Expo Awards 2024.

The award application is focused on their i-COT technology development project, a close collaboration with Shell to develop class-accredited remote inspection technologies for performing un-manned cargo oil tank inspections on offshore floating structures such as FPSO’s, FSO’s and FPU’s.

They have developed a fully integrated and specialised advanced corrosion mapping scanning ROV that has been designed to operate in cargo oil tanks and field tested in ballast tanks. The technology and services also include unlimited flights time drone systems and robotic crawlers to perform inspection of cargo oil tanks fully un-manned and only with robotics.

They had recently completed a very successful pilot project with a valued client in the USA using this technology to inspect and scan cargo oil tanks remotely, and the results exceeded their expectations.

This technology has been designed, engineered and built through decades of experience with FPSO hull tank and classification society inspections, subsea advanced NDT sensors, subsea robotics, confined space entries and mini ROV technologies. Their i-COT technology incorporates a fully integrated and customised multiplexed ultrasonic scanning tool within the ROV itself combined with cutting-edge navigation, sensors, and tools that can operate within the cargo hold tanks and hulls on FPSOs, and other offshore floating structures. Collecting over 19 million data points per tank and aligning them to a digital twin, the technology generates vast amounts of high-precision data to support integrity management decisions and represents a step change in the inspection of FPSO hulls and tanks that will assist in making a safer industry.

The i-COT technology has also been successfully demonstrated to the satisfaction of attending classification society and has been included within their recently updated RITS certification portfolio.

Visit Sonomatic at stand 81 at the Subsea Expo, P&J Live February 20-22, where they will be showcasing this new and highly advanced i-COT tool. The award winners will be announced at the Subsea Expo Awards Dinner on Wednesday, February 21, 2024.

Charles Loader, Sonomatic’s General Manager for Europe and Africa said: “This highly complex technology project that was delivered across 3 continents, 5 countries and took over 4 years to complete. It has brought together all of the expertise within our group of companies and valued client Shell, we are very proud of all the team for their achievements.”

Peter Tawse, International Operations Manager for Geo Oceans followed: “As the Project director, it is extremely rewarding to see the project delivery team acknowledged for the outstanding work they have done to design and build such an advanced ROV platform and inspection system that can withstand the harsh environments of crude oil tanks.”
