Former Manchester United and Aberdeen Football Club boss Alex Ferguson, flew up to Aberdeen to officially open the new state-of-the-art development at Meldrum House.
The legendary Scot took time to meet with management and staff at Meldrum House before speaking at a VIP lunch and unveiling a plaque in the hotel’s new Ballroom.
The hotel completed a £4.5million extension in June adding 28 bedrooms, a boardroom for 10 delegates and a new ballroom for up to 200 people. The original 13th century country house in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire was first made into a hotel in the 1950s. Privately owned, the hotel was transformed to a four-star luxury retreat in 2009. It has won numerous awards over the years, most notably AA Hotel of the Year for Scotland in November 2014 and 2 Red Rosettes for its Dining Room.
Bob Edwards, Director of Meldrum House, said: “We are delighted that Sir Alex was able to return to Meldrum House as he had opened our last development in 2009. It seemed fitting that he came back to see the expansion of the hotel and what we have achieved over the years. What we have created at Meldrum House is unrivalled for the area and we plan to market the hotel and its new development as aT luxury retreat and golf destination, all over the world.”
Sir Alex, said: “I love coming to Aberdeen. It is always nice to come back. The new wing at Meldrum House is really impressive and you have created something very special here for the North-east and it’s a fantastic achievement.”
Meldrum House sits within a 240-acre estate and now boasts 51 bedrooms. As part of the new development, it has extended and refurbished its 800 year-old Cave Bar and created a new Dining Room to cope with the increased number of guests. An 18-hole golf course surrounds the hotel and a Whisky Club will be launched later this year. For more information log onto www.meldrumhouse.com.
