An Aberdeen housebuilder has sown the seeds for a sensory garden initiative launched at an Aberdeen school, which aims to provide fun, interactive and supportive spaces for pupils to enjoy.

Cala Homes (North) has donated more than £600 to Milltimber School as part of its Community Pledge initiative, which has allowed the school to purchase nine planters for the sensory area located near the main playground.

The planters will allow pupils to plant their own flowers in the relaxing garden space, learning all about how plants grow and adding even more vibrant colour to the gardens, which also features other sensory spaces including water trays and a sand pit.

The school also received the topsoil needed for the planters from Cala Homes, who donated this from its neighbouring Murtle Den Park at Oldfold Village development.

The programme is a core part of Cala Homes’ Community Pledge, the housebuilder’s commitment to bring meaningful investment to its local communities.

Steven Skinner, teacher at Milltimber School, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Cala team for this donation. When playing outdoors, children can learn so much through discovery and this sensory garden will help pupils to benefit from all the positives of outdoor activities.

“With this funding, we’ve been able to take a large leap in bringing our garden space to life and the pupils are very excited to see how it looks when the planters have fully bloomed.”

Samantha Leckie, marketing manager at Cala Homes (North), said: “At Cala, we fully understand the importance of creating sensory spaces for families to enjoy so we were thrilled to be able to support the team at Milltimber School with their sensory garden plans.

“We hope that the children get plenty of enjoyment using the planters to grow their own flowers – we look forward to seeing what colourful and beautiful gardens they create.”
