An air of mystery and excitement has been added as a special ingredient to Aberdeen Restaurant Weeks – with the return of the hugely-popular Secret Suppers, one of them “in a setting few ever see”.
The two “highly-classified” evenings offer a unique dining experience for foodie fans who sign up ... but exactly where they are going and what they will be served won’t be revealed until the day of the meal.
Discerning diners had better be quick, though – Secret Suppers held last year sold out within hours of going on sale, said Aberdeen Inspired, organisers of Aberdeen Restaurant Weeks which will run from Monday, February 24, to Sunday, March 9.
Shona Byrne, project manager for Aberdeen Inspired, said: “Secret Suppers tantalise both the tastebuds and the imagination and such was the overwhelmingly positive response last time that we knew we had to bring them back.
“People love the intrigue and sense of expectation of signing up for a dining experience with no idea of where they will be going or what will be happening on the evening. Half wthe fun is trying to guess before the big reveal on the day.
“I am sworn to secrecy on the mystery venues joining the fun for this Foodie Fortnight, but I can guarantee diners will have a delightful experience to remember.
“Given how quickly past Secret Suppers have sold out, I’d urge people to snap up their places as quickly as possible – especially if you are looking for a surprise Valentine gift for someone.”
The first Secret Supper will be held on Wednesday, February 26, and the second will be on Thursday, March 6. Tickets are on sale now.
Although Shona is staying tight-lipped, the Aberdeen Restaurant Weeks website offers some clues.
The event on February 26 is billed as: “You had me at Merlot!” with diners invited to join a Secret Supper that has been aged to perfection.
The website says: “Hosted by an expert sommelier and wine connoisseur the evening will take you on a journey through some of the finest local seasonal produce perfectly prepared and paired to match with fine wines from around the world.
“An intimate family table dining experience, it will be filled with ripe conversation and is certain to cultivate friendships with fellow foodies. Diners can chat to and soak up the knowledge of the expert sommelier and enjoy hearing chef’s thoughts on the specially crafted Secret Supper dishes.
“A fine wine and dine Secret Supper that is a must for those who love good wine, good food and good company.”
The event on March 6 is titled “Behind Closed Doors” with canapes followed by four courses, plus an arrival drink.
The website says: “Step beyond the gates for a secret dining experience, where every course is served with a touch of mystery and exclusivity.
“You’ll be tucked away in a setting few ever see, exclusive access coupled with a perfectly pitched menu, this is a night for those who savour the unexpected.”
On the subject of Aberdeen Restaurant Weeks events selling out quickly, all the spots have been taken for one of the “Sundae School” sessions at Mackie’s 19.2 Ice Cream Parlour.
Shona said: “Clearly people thought the idea of creating your own sundaes then graduating with a certificate and special photo was to cool an opportunity to pass up.
“But there are still places at our other fun events, such as a chance to dunk your own donut at Dough & Co or go zen with a mix of yoga and food packages at Second Home Studio.”
With more than 70 restaurants, bars and cafes taking part and cuisines ranging from Asian to Scottish, Mexican to French, there is something to suit all tastes when the foodie fortnight returns. On offer will be lunch and dinner menus at special prices ranging from £5 to £30.
