The Scottish Government is going back to the drawing board on its plans to encourage home owners to switch to greener heating.

Gillian Martin, the acting net-zero secretary, said the Heat in Buildings Bill draft would no longer be being put before MSPs in its current form.

Ms Martin, the BBC reports, admitted the bill, which had been drafted by the Scottish Greens and formed part of the Bute House Agreement, would "make people poorer".

The decision to pull the bill has been met with distain by Scottish Greens co-leader Patrick Harvie who said it "flies in the face of the climate ambitions that this government is supposed to have".

The bill would have made it law to replace gas boilers with alternatives such as electric heat pumps within a certain time frame following the purchase of a property.

The heating of homes, mainly with the use of gas boilers, contributes 18.5% of Scotland's greenhouse gas emissions.
