The Scottish government has abandoned its "not realistic" climate change target of reducing car use by 20% by 2030.

The ambitious target was originally an SNP manifesto pledge, but has now been dropped altogether with car use having only declined 3.6% in Scotland since the pandemic.

Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop, the BBC reports, told MSPs that the target was "not realistic and will need to be changed".

Watchdogs Audit Scotland and Accounts Commision warned in January the 20% goal was "unlikely" to be met by 2030, blaming a lack of leadership in the area and there being "no clear plan".

And now, Hyslop has conceded the government will not be able to deliver on the pledge, adding: "We will have more realistic targets.

"I'm reviewing the target, we won't be able to deliver 20% car kilometre reductions.

"We are reappraising what we are doing."
