To mark International Women's Day, Save the Children UK has announced Danielle Flecher-Horn, Founder of Aberdeen children's charity - AberNecessities, as one of their “cost of living champions” for refusing to standby while the impacts of plummeting incomes have played out around the UK. They believe that Danielle has demonstrated the transformative power of women in difficult times.
AberNecessities is a proudly female-led organization that brings together the local community to support families facing extreme financial hardship and we are determined to succeed in our work for change - because No Child Should Go Without.
Danii said: “I am very proud to be a woman. I feel very proud to work with and for women and AberNecessities champions female empowerment. We're strong, our bodies do amazing things. When we look at our children, we need to empower each other and make each other feel good about the fact that we've brought another life into the world. We have a responsibility as human beings to recognise, value and encourage each other, for the well-being and happiness of families and children and to help create a world that is open and inclusive.”
Danielle is a trained Specialist and Early Intervention teacher, working with children struggling to adapt and engage in education, often caused by child poverty. Poverty impacts a child's life experience, often causing behavioural and developmental issues, leading to further feelings of exclusion. Driven by her experience as a teacher, and as a mother, Danielle founded AberNecessities, working to support low-income household with basic essentials that no child should go without. Danielle and her team work with a vast network of professionals across the NHS, social work and education to support families with items such as nappies and formula to clothing, bedding and equipment for children up to 18 years. Since its launch in 2019, AberNecessities has supported over 10,000 children.
Save the Children UK has worked on a photo series of women across the country supporting their communities in the cost of living crisis to mark this year's International Women's Day (Wednesday March 8).
As the cost of living crisis continues, meet some of the brilliant women doing what they can to make a difference.
