Local children’s charity, Kayleigh’s Wee Stars (KWS), have added an additional route to their popular annual fundraiser, to encourage runners of all experience levels to take part.

Held in Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire, the annual 10K run, which regularly draws hundreds of participants each year, will still be available for runners who enjoy the challenge of running a multi-terrain trail over the Barra Hill. The inclusion of the 5K run provides a more accessible option for runners of all experience levels, allowing a wider range of individuals to take part in the event, allowing more support for the local charity.

Known previously as ‘Barra 10K’, the annual fundraiser has rebranded to ‘Run Barra’ to fit with their latest addition of a 5K route. The event is a family friendly occasion, with Active Schools organising junior races which take place before the 5k and 10K.

KWS was set up in 2012 by Jonathan and Anna Cordiner after losing their 2-year-old daughter Kayleigh to a terminal brain tumour. The charity focuses on reducing the financial burden for families who are caring for a terminally ill child, helping them to make the most of their remaining time together.

Charity manager, Anna Cordiner says: “Run Barra is an important date in our fundraising calendar, and we are delighted to welcome it back for the eighth time this year. We are hugely grateful for the support of our sponsors. Their contributions mean that absolutely all of the money raised from this event’s entry fee will be going directly to families where there is a child with a terminal diagnosis”.

“We are always looking at new ways to adapt the event in order to encourage more people to take part. Run Barra’s 5K route starts the same as the 10K with the first two kilometres, before heading off the scenic route around the edge of Barra Estate before reaching the finish line at Meldrum Academy Park. We are looking forward to the first year of introducing this 5K as we predict it will be a popular addition”.

Jonathan Cordiner, Daddy to Kayleigh, adds: “It is great to see Run Barra returning for another year, especially with the introduction of our 5K race. Every year we are blown away by the community support, so we are excited to open this opportunity to even more people to help us continue our important work”.
