Composer Paul Mealor brings his ever-popular Caritas Choir back to Braemar on Sunday, September 8, with an afternoon concert in St Margaret’s rounding off the weekend of the world-famous Braemar Gathering.

Mealor has gained international acclaim, as a favourite composer of the Royal Family. He was commissioned to write three works for the Scottish Coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, besides a “Coronation Kyrie” set in the Welsh language and sung by Welsh bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel in Westminster Abbey.

Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II, Mealor’s setting of Psalm 118 in Gaelic was performed by Karen Matheson in St Giles Cathedral, for the national service of thanksgiving.

The brilliant Caritas Choir, which has made a pilgrimage to Braemar to perform each September now for many years, is named after Mealor’s composition “Ubi Caritas” written for the Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton.

The ensemble, made up of singers associated with Mealor over many years, presents a concert of popular and new choral classics.

The concert takes place on Sunday, September 8, 2024, with doors at 3pm for a 3.30pm start. Tickets are £15 for adults, £7.50 for under 16s and £12 for Friends of St Margaret’s.

St Margaret’s is a unique performance, arts and heritage venue in Braemar, Scotland. Breathing new life into this beautiful historic building has been a decade’s work for a loyal team of trustees and volunteers — transforming St Margaret’s from a neglected church into a vibrant arts and community space.

The venue is generously supported by Iwan and Manuela Wirth, leading figures in the art world and owners of the Fife Arms hotel. St Margaret’s is proud to have Iwan and Manuela Wirth and Paul Mealor as patrons.

Looking forward to next this week's concert, Paul Mealor: “We always enjoy singing in St Margaret’s incredible acoustic and are always welcomed most warmly by the regular audience.”

Venue Manager of St Margaret’s Braemar, Lyndsey Boden, said: “We are delighted that Paul and his wonderful choir will be returning to St Margaret’s next weekend.

“It’s now an established tradition on the day following the Braemar Gathering – one which our regular audience very much looks forward to and new visitors to the village certainly won’t want to miss.”
