This week, the Robert Gordon’s community was saddened to learn of the passing of former pupil, Sir Jim Walker, Class of ‘62, a figure widely regarded for his contributions to both business and society.

The outpouring of tributes from across the world highlights the deep respect and admiration held for Sir Jim’s outstanding contribution to his family business, Walker’s Shortbread, with one word standing out above all others: "gentleman."

A true embodiment of this word, Sir Jim’s legacy extends far beyond his status as an outstanding business leader. His kindness, humility, and generosity of spirit were evident in every interaction, and he made an indelible impact on those fortunate enough to know him.

Sir Jim Walker’s business acumen was equally celebrated. As former joint managing director of Walkers Shortbread, a globally recognised company known for its high-quality traditional Scottish shortbread, Sir Jim worked alongside his older brother Joe (Class of ‘55) to help expand the family-owned business into an international brand. His leadership and dedication to quality and tradition helped solidify Walker's reputation, not only in Scotland but across the world. The company, established by his grandfather in the 19th century, flourished under his stewardship, and Sir Jim’s personal touch was seen in every aspect of the business. Known for its strong family values and community spirit, Walkers Shortbread has maintained its position as one of Scotland’s most cherished brands.

2024 has been a significant year for Sir Jim, as the company celebrates 125 years of Walker’s Shortbread and 40 years since they began supporting the world renowned New York Tartan Week. As one of the headline sponsors for the event, Sir Jim shared with the College that he had never attended in person. On learning that Robert Gordon’s College Pipe Band and Highland Dancers were participating in the 2024 Tartan Day parade, Sir Jim’s strong affinity with the College led him to attend in person and march alongside the pipers, drummers, dancers and former pupils who had travelled to New York from around the world.

Robin Macpherson, Head of College paid tribute, he said: "I had the honour of spending time with Sir Jim on a trip to New York for Tartan Week earlier this year and attending events together with Robert Gordon’s alumni. This was an immensely proud moment for the College to have Sir Jim dedicate so much support and fully immerse himself in the RGC Tartan Weekend. He was, without a doubt, one of the finest individuals I have ever met—one of Scotland's true gentlemen."

Sir Jim Walker was distinguished by his dedication to supporting Scottish culture and institutions, particularly Robert Gordon’s College where he and his brother Joe had attended the school from 1958 to 1961.

Laura Presslie, Director of Advancement shared: "Sir Jim was incredibly passionate about Robert Gordon's College and was always ready to lend his support. We truly valued his encouragement, advice and insight into the world. He was always ready to help the College and made a lasting impact on generations of pupils and staff."

Robin Macpherson added: “I have also enjoyed meeting Sir Jim at a recent Gordonian dinner locally in Aberdeen and visiting him at the Walkers’s headquarters at Aberlour House to see the company in its Highland setting, which he loved so much. We spent a long time talking about the history of the company, from its humble origins to being one of Scotland’s most recognised global brands. Sir Jim’s crucial role was pivotal in this, and the growth of Walker’s brought enormous benefit to the local community as well as Scotland’s reputation for entrepreneurship.”

Walker's Shortbread, which Sir Jim alongside his brother Joe, until Joe’s passing in 2021, led with distinction, is another cornerstone of his legacy. His passing leaves a void not only within the business world but also within the many charitable and educational initiatives he supported throughout his life. As news of his death spread, tributes poured in from former pupils and staff, all expressing their sorrow and admiration for Sir Jim Walker who will be remembered for his kindness, drive and entrepreneurial spirit.

Robin added: "Our thoughts are with his family and everyone at Walkers Shortbread during this difficult time. Sir Jim will be sadly missed but very fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him. While Sir Jim Walker may no longer be with us, his legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of those who were touched by his generosity, wisdom, and kindness. He will always be remembered as one of the truly great Gordonians."
