Robert Gordon University (RGU) is celebrating a record-breaking student election as it receives the highest turn out of votes in the university’s history.

Organised by RGU’s Students’ Union (RGU:Union), the student election for the 2016/17 academic year attracted a turnout of 2243 students – a 7.6 per cent increase on last year - casting a total of 12,625 votes and the highest number of contested positions ever in a RGU election.

An annual event, the RGU Student Election sees nominated students from across the university compete to run for the various presidential positions which form the executive team at the helm of RGU:Union.

Following a campaign period held in March, a record number of students turned out during RGU’s election week last month to cast a vote for their favourite candidate across 15 categories.

The winners were announced on Friday, March 25 which includes the three new student presidents as well as a record number of vice-president positions, which all work to represent the student body.

Michele Collie, General Manager of RGU:Union, says: “We are thrilled with the turnout this year which saw a record number of students engage with the election period.

“There was a real buzz about campus as our candidates all did a fantastic job at campaigning for their nominated positions as they battled it out to represent the student body.

“We are looking forward to welcoming one of the largest executive teams to date at the helm of RGU:Union which will work closely with the student body and university across a wide range of areas to continually enhance the student experience.”
