Robert Gordon University (RGU) is hosting a round-the-clock hacking competition for students from across the north and North-east of Scotland.
The RGU Hackathon, an official Major League Hacking (MLH) event, will take place on Saturday, April 16 until Sunday, April 17, and will see teams of students given 24-hours to crack a number of set challenges.
They will also have access to a range of hardware such as drones to bring their ideas to life.
Organisers expect to attract more than 60 students from RGU, the University of Aberdeen, Dundee University, St Andrews University and Abertay University, with the first batch of free tickets for the event being snapped up in less than a day.
Hacking will kick off at 1pm on the Saturday, running until 1pm the following day, after which the hacks will be presented and awards given out. It is the second year RGU has run the event.
Second year Computer Science student and secretary of RGU’s Computer Science Society, Annabelle Macleod, has led the organisation of the hackathon alongside fellow student Stanislav Hamara who set up the first RGU Hack last year.
She said: “Myself and the rest of the organisers are very much looking forward to the event as this will be results of several months of planning and organising and promises to be a great week end of fun challenges.
“It will also be a great opportunity to meet lots of other like-minded students.
On the day itself, there will be some set challenges, some from MLH, some from our sponsors and some from RGU staff, and there will also be a lot of hardware and equipment that people can use to do their own thing.”
She added: “For participants it will be a great way to put into practice their coding skills as well as demonstrating their ability to work within certain constraints like time or equipment.
“If they choose some of the set challenges it will also be a good simulation of a client-developer relationship. Finally, most of our participants look at the event as a great way to network and have some fun as well as finding out about new cool technologies.”
