RGU to hold first student accommodation fair

Robert Gordon University (RGU) is holding its first ‘Live Right Housing Fair’ next week to support students in making the right decision when looking for accommodation in the city.

Set to take place on Thursday, March 31 at the university’s Garthdee campus, the fair is being organised by RGU’s Students’ Union (RGU:Union) as part of its new ‘Live Right’ campaign which aims to help students find safe and affordable accommodation in Aberdeen.

A number of accommodation providers and suppliers will be present at the fair, which runs from 11am to 3pm on University Street and aims to provide students with a one-stop-shop for all of their housing needs.

The fair will feature stalls from estate agencies, energy suppliers, deposit schemes, student accommodation suppliers and charities which will be on hand to chat to students, helping them gather information to make educated decisions about where they live.

Edward Pollock, student president for communication and democracy, said that the newly launched ‘RGU:Union Live Right’ campaign is a result of student feedback as housing is one of the key concerns and financial pressures for students at RGU.

He said: “Each year thousands of students leave home for the first time and move into student accommodation and then to private housing which can be challenging and involves making big decisions.

“We feel it is important that students have the right information to make the right choices about how they live and so we decided to establish the ‘Live Right’ campaign to ensure students have the support to find safe and affordable accommodation, as well a place to share their experiences and learn more.

“The Live Right Housing Fair is part of the campaign to create opportunities for students to find suitable housing. Students will be able to meet with agencies and suppliers, plan their living arrangements and have all the information they need in one place to make informed choices.”

RGU:Union has also organised a ‘Find a Flat Workshop’ as part of the event where a number of speakers will provide essential information and step-by-step guidance for students looking to move accommodation this year.

The workshop is open to all students and will take place from 12noon to 1pm in room 225 at Aberdeen Business School.

Edward adds: “It is a challenge to make such big decisions, and we feel it is important students have all the support and information they need to make the right choice.”
