RGU to celebrate World Social Work Day

Robert Gordon University (RGU) will celebrate World Social Work Day this month with an event featuring a number of guest speakers.

Organisers from the university’s School of Applied Social Studies have planned the free event which will be held on Tuesday, March 15 in the Sir Ian Wood Building.

A number of speakers have been booked to speak at the building’s front amphitheatre between midday and 2pm.

They include: Dr Joe Morrow QC, who is President of the Mental Health Tribunal for Scotland and Lord Lyon King of Arms; John Sawkins, a retired teacher who works with advocacy and mental health groups; RGU student social worker Hannah Hudson; and Graeme Simpson, Children’s Services Manager at Aberdeen City Council.

Janine Bolger, Head of Social Work in RGU's School of Applied Social Studies, has worked with colleagues to organise the event.

She said: “We are proud to celebrate World Social Work Day 2016 with a range of great speakers which I'm sure will attract significant interest from staff, students and members of the public.

"The theme of the day this year is 'Promoting the Dignity and Worth of Peoples' which gives another opportunity for the profession to express international solidarity and to bring common messages to governments, regional bodies and to our communities.”

There will be a second hand book stall and funds from this will be donated to the collection for Aberdeen’s Syrian refugees. Donations of non-perishable food items can also be handed in on the day.
