Students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) have raised thousands of pounds for charity.
A raft of charity events organised by RGU:RAG (raising and giving), the fundraising arm of RGU’s Students’ Union, have raised £2493 which will be split between a range of charities.
The charity cash was partly raised during RGU’s RAG Week, a jam-packed student annual fundraising week which took place last month from Monday, October 26, raising a total of £2127.
The RGU:RAG Week total will be split between a number of chosen charities including Cancer Research UK, Marie Carie UK, Mental Health Foundation, Little Princess Trust, the British Heart Foundation, Aberdeen Cyrenians, Lumos, Childreach International and Special Effect Charity.
RGU students also played their part in this month’s Children In Need appeal which saw them appear on the BBC’s live television show on Friday, November 13 and raise a total of £366 for disadvantaged children across the UK.
RGU:RAG borrowed the appeal’s Pudsey mascot for a weekend and spent 16 hours from Friday, November 6 to Sunday, November 8 fundraising at Aberdeen’s Codona's Amusement Park and View Cinema where they offered members of the public the chance to meet Pudsey and get a ‘selfie’ for a donation.
RGU nursing student, Marty McGouran (29), is the current chair of RGU:RAG and led the organisation of the various fundraising activities.
He said: “I am delighted at the success of our fundraising events which proved to be really popular and raised thousands of pounds for charity.
“The total achieved demonstrates the generosity and enthusiasm of RGU students to help to make a difference and support a diverse range of worthwhile causes.”
RGU:RAG Week events included a charity sleepout; a ‘Onesie Friday’; a band night at the Tunnels; a Halloween themed bake off; a gaming night organised by RGU’s Gaming Society; a Harry Potter face painting day; and a charity Zumbathon.
