RGU students organise weekend of festivals in the city

Aberdeen students are celebrating the city’s multi arts and cultural scene by organising a weekend of festivals.

Events Management students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) are organising six events with different themes over the weekend of April 22-24 as part of their Live Festival Management project.

Inspired by the growing portfolio of festivals in the city, the students have created a weekend of diverse cultural events which will work alongside each other to showcase some of the talent the city has to offer.

To kick the weekend off on Friday April 22, The Hotsy Totsy Hideaway event will take a step back in time to the 1920s and T in the Tunnels will bring the outside indoors to deliver a music festival.

The Saturday will see the Stars and Stripes event bring American fun and games, such as beer pong and cotton candy to Tunnels. Los Juegos – a Mexican games night – will also be held on the same night and will explore the Mexican culture in a fun and active way featuring team challenges such as ‘Toss the Sombrero’ or the Chilli Challenge.

Culturestory will bring a colourful day to the Granite City on the Sunday by showcasing the diverse culture in Aberdeen, with African and Caribbean nibbles and entertainment.

The weekend’s events will end with an official Aberdeen Student Festival closing party, the Twisted Carnival. This final event which will also be held on the Sunday will feature haunted woods, circus performers and magic.

Rachael Ironside, lecturer in Events Management at RGU’s Aberdeen Business School, said: “The Live Festival Management project is an innovative module testing all the practical skills students have developed throughout their course.

“Teams have to plan, manage and produce and evaluate a live festival event in Aberdeen city centre and they’ve came up with a fantastic diverse line up of events.

“We are all very much looking forward to the festival which I am sure will be an excellent addition to Aberdeen’s cultural event calendar.”

Angela Michael, Aberdeen Festivals Manager, said: “It's exciting to see a student festival starting up in Aberdeen.

“The addition of a student festival in Aberdeen also helps to integrate the students even more into the cultural fabric of the city.

“The students will have worked really hard to put on this programme and I'd encourage everyone to support the festival by attending some of the events on offer.”
