Students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) are set to bring the Christmas spirit to the less fortunate this December.
RGU’s Garthdee campus is gearing up to be the setting of a number of festive donation drives led by students and RGU:RAG, the fundraising arm of the university’s Students’ Union.
The university community is being urged to give the gift of games this Christmas by supporting RGU’s student Gaming Society’s donation drive for VSA and the Archie Foundation.
Staff and students can donate any type of game from board, sports and video to toys and puzzles from Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 11 at ‘Super Mario’ themed collection boxes located at the main receptions of RGU’s campus buildings.
The RGU community is also being encouraged to get into the giving spirit this Christmas by supporting the RGU:RAG Festive Food Drive in junction with TLC Aberdeen Food Bank, which will run from Monday, November 30 to Friday, December 11.
Either individually or in a group, staff and students can sponsor a disadvantaged family this festive season by providing food for a Christmas dinner from the TLC Aberdeen Food Bank’s ‘Christmas dinner shopping list’.
Donation points will be placed at the reception areas of the main campus buildings which will be monitored by students from the university’s Nutrition Society, The Nationalist Society and The Business Society who have teamed up with RGU:RAG to ensure the drive is a success.
RGU student Marty McGouran (29), chair of RGU:RAG, said: “Christmas is a special time of year but there are many families who struggle with the festive period due to its expense and expectations.
“For some Christmas day will not be about feasting and presents, instead it will be a challenge to put food on the table and there will be children who wake up to no presents at all.
“RGU students are playing their part in spreading the festive spirit by organising campus donation drives to help those most disadvantaged enjoy the season, ensuring children in Aberdeen have a toy to unwrap on Christmas morning or families have enough food for a Christmas dinner.”
